2020-21 KEVIN HIGGINS COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

JOSHUA VARGAS

CAL POLY

Josh Vargas credits rugby for shaping his character, work ethic, and leadership skills. Prior to finding the game in the eleventh grade, he was eager to experience a team sport. Once he found rugby, he began to blossom in every aspect of his life. He played two seasons for the Elk Grove United Rugby Club and became highly praised for his never-ending commitment to improving his game. “Josh put his heart and soul into preparing. It was his time to shine. His determination, his grit, and pure love for the game was inspiring to watch bloom. I wish all players were so easy to teach and guide toward their goals. I am confident that Josh will make an asset to any organization he sets his sights on becoming a member. Josh will make himself valuable,” said Scott Ellison, Elk Grove United Rugby Club head coach.

Vargas will continue his athletic and academic career at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He is interested in pursuing a business career and one day owning a business of his own. On the pitch for the Cal Poly Mustangs, he will strive to push himself to new limits as a rugby player and individual and wants to continue to incorporate his rugby experience and lessons into his everyday life. While COVID-19 has presented challenges to the traditional collegiate rugby format, Vargas has shown his grit and determination to succeeding at the next level. “

Joshua has been reliable, communicated well to me and the senior players, attended all the sessions required of him, and maintained strong grades through his first term at Cal Poly. We are very happy with his progress and he looks to be a great addition to our program,” said Cal Poly Rugby Head Coach, James Tesoriero.
