Youth Rugby Initiative Brings Rugby to Mount Vernon Christian School in Washington State

November 18, 2025

The U.S. Rugby Foundation is proud to highlight another inspiring story from the Youth Rugby Initiative, powered by Imagine Rugby, a program dedicated to introducing the game of rugby to schools across the nation.

Thanks to a generous donor’s contribution through the Youth Rugby Initiative, students at Mount Vernon Christian School in Washington recently received their very own rugby kit, complete with 8 rugby balls, 30 flag belts, and 50 field markers. This equipment has already made its way into the school’s PE program, where students across both middle and high school are discovering the fun, teamwork, and energy of rugby for the first time.

PE Teacher John Burmeister shared his excitement and gratitude for the new addition to his classes, noting how the sport has already started to capture students’ interest. In addition to providing the necessary equipment, the Youth Rugby Initiative supplied lesson and curriculum plans to help integrate flag rugby into the school’s physical education program.

As an added bonus, Mount Vernon Christian School connected with players from the Seattle Seawolves, giving students the chance to meet local rugby role models and learn from professionals in the sport.

This success story is a testament to what’s possible when donors, educators, and community partners come together to the game of rugby at the grassroots level.
