US RUGBY FOUNDATION BALL GRANT RECIPIENT SPOTLIGHT – BROOKLYN TECH RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB

November 2, 2020

The Brooklyn Tech Rugby Football Club was founded in the Fall of 2018. We are a two-season — fall and spring — high school rugby program complete with both boys and girls rugby sides. Both sides play separate, interscholastic competitions in the Metropolitan League of Rugby NY. Rugby NY is a USA Rugby affiliate.

Brooklyn Tech also features both Sevens Rugby and Fifteens Rugby.

Our club’s boys and girls rugby sides both compete in a relatively new autumn tournament series between member teams of the Metropolitan League of Rugby NY and other tri-state area clubs.

High school 15s competition typically takes place during the Rugby NY spring season. Since moving up a level, our boys solely take part in fifteen-a-side rugby contests in the spring and do so as a member team of the Metropolitan League of Rugby NY — Division-II South.

Our girls rugby competition at Brooklyn Tech has a slightly different framework as the squad ultimately participates in two seasons of sevens play: Rugby NY in the fall and the Public School Athletic League during the spring. Until the PSAL approves our application, however, our girls sevens will continue to compete in Rugby NY play for the fall and spring schedule. Contrary to the PSAL, Rugby NY also offers member teams a chance to assemble an all-star city selects team who periodically trains together as a fifteens rugby unit — amid the spring sevens season — in preparation for the Rugby NY 15s State Tournament held in early June.

No matter the case, our rugby club offers a variety of inclusive opportunities for its student-athletes: the potential for fall, spring, and even summer rugby competition; an annual rugby college fair; regional rugby clinics; meeting and training with professional players and coaches from Major League Rugby; and attending MLR’s Rugby United New York matches. Our long-term plans include the (eventual) expansion of Brooklyn Tech’s boys and girls teams to both varsity and JV levels, and hopefully continuing to add — to whom we warmly refer to as our — Fans of Rugby.

We practice in a sandlot at a park across from the school, dirt and sand destroy training balls very quickly. The USRF Ball Grant will help offset the costs of ball purchases. Over the years, the USRF has supplied thousands of size four and five balls to over 1,400 youth and high school rugby teams, schools and community programs.
