July 8, 2007

San Diego, CA (July 8, 2007) – Two graduating high school seniors from the Hyde Leadership Public Charter School in Washington, DC have been awarded $1,000 college scholarships from the Rugby Foundation. The two student athletes, Byfield Parkingson and Derrick Dorsey, are the only two seniors on the Hyde rugby team and both will play rugby while continuing their education.Parkingson will be attending Radford University in Radford, VA while Dorsey will study accounting at Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, PA.Hyde Athletic Director and rugby coach, Tal Bayer, had only praise for his two seniors.“These kids are very deserving of the Rugby Foundation scholarships. They have both had to overcome many challenges during their lives so far but during their time with the rugby program, I have seen them grow so much. Byfield is a very calm, focused individual both in the classroom and athletic field. After joining our rugby program that same year, he quickly established himself as a leader and did so by the example of how he has lived his life. Derrick has worked hard to become a model student, life long learner and model of our school’s character culture. He is a 4-year Varsity Letterman athlete in football, wrestling and rugby.”The USRF is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization established in 1963. Although its main focus is supporting youth and high school rugby, the Foundation also provides grants to coaches and referees; establishes international student exchanges and college scholarships, has assisted the United States Collegiate All-Americans and Boys Under-19 teams, and also provides grants to Safety and Risk Management Research. For more information about the Foundation, go to its website at: www.usrugbyfoundation.org.
