New Champions Crowned at 2nd Annual USRF Scrumble

San Diego, CA (February 13, 2009) – It appeared as if the team anchored by Kevin Casey and Wes Shmidt was going to defend its Scrumble crown as they were the early leaders in the clubhouse with a score of -11. The other two members of the team, former Eagles skipper Mike Saunders and Rick Wallacethought their score would hold up.But with just one foursome left on the course, into the clubhouse walked Steve Prelock, Dan Shaw, Patrick Casinelli and Darren DeSpain (Pictured above L-R.) holding a scorecard that recorded an impressive -12 on the par 72 course. The round of golf was just the beginning though as the golfers enjoyed lunch at the beautiful Morgan Run Club and Resort. That was followed by a raffle that consisted of some unique prizes, including rugby jerseys and a signed ball by this year’s USA 7s Eagles team. Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin winners received signed balls by the teams from Fiji, England, New Zealand and South Africa. And after the lunch and raffle there was still time to take in a couple of matches at the SDI rugby tournament just minutes away.“I want to thank all those who took part in this year’s Scrumble,” said USRF Executive Director Brian Vizard. “I knew many were fearing that rain would come and spoil the fun but the rugby and golf gods were smiling down on us and I think all those who came out today enjoyed their day on the course. One of the highlights of the Scrumble is all the raffle prizes on hand and the USRF thanks all those who donated prizes and sponsored holes for the Scrumble.”All proceeds raised from the Scrumble will be directed towards the Rugby Foundation’s youth and high school programs.
