2018 Terry O'Reilly
Memorial Scholarship Recipient
San Diego, CA (December 12, 2018) - “Rugby is more than just a sport. I think that it is a culture and can teach life lessons throughout your life,” said 2018 Terry O'Reilly Memorial Scholarship recipient, Jacob Jenkins. Jenkins credits rugby with teaching him the value of respect. Whether it is on the pitch, in the classroom, or in his community, he is able to apply the morals and values he has learned through rugby to everyday life.
Jacob was a four-year member of the Carlsbad High School Rugby Club in Carlsbad, California. In addition, he played for several high-level teams including the Southern California Griffins, Carlsbad Thunder, Encinitas Coastal Dragons, Rhinos Rugby Academy, Southern California Barbarians, and the Eagle Impact Rugby Academy. He was selected as captain and MVP for the Coastal Dragons and Carlsbad Thunder on multiple occasions. Jenkins was also selected to the High School All American U18 National Winter Camp but was sidelined due to injury.
“His curiosity and self-motivation are indicative to the progress he has made on his fundamental skills development. I believe Jacob possesses essential leadership qualities to make a success of himself in whatever field or endeavor he chooses. He’s a great team man and understands the dynamics of working collectively in a group to achieve a common goal,” said Charlie Purdon, San Diego Rhinos Rugby Academy Head Coach.
Jenkins graduated from Carlsbad High School with a 3.1 GPA in the spring of 2018. He was involved in several extracurricular activities, including football, associated student body, and served as an American Sign Language volunteer. Jacob completed his seal of bi-literacy in ASL and dedicated over 100 hours of volunteer service to coordinate and execute events for the deaf.
Jenkins will continue his rugby career at the collegiate level with the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers in Vallejo, California. At Cal Maritime, he will pursue a major that will steer him in the right path to a career in global business. As a self-described entrepreneur, he looks forward to starting businesses all over the world in the future. His ultimate goal is to become a professional rugby player.
“Although a freshman, Jacob has had a very positive impact on practices and our games. I truly look forward to Jacob growing more both academically and on the field. He is a joy to coach,” said Steven Hiatt, Cal Maritime Rugby Head Coach.
Congratulations, Jacob, on being selected as the 2018 Terry O’Reilly Memorial Scholarship recipient.
