Charity Tenney -
 2017 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (December 31, 2017) - Charity Tenney always envisioned her future on the basketball court, until she started playing rugby during her freshman year of high school. She immediately fell in love with the sport and knew that rugby would soon become a stronghold in her life. The rugby pitch served as a personal escape for Charity, allowing her to reset from the many stresses of school and life. The sport of rugby has opened up doors for Tenney like she has never imagined, from furthering her education, to traveling the world, and even being named a 2017 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.

Charity, a Girl’s U.S. High School All-American, played for United Rugby Girls Club 15s where she led the team to back to back Utah State Championship titles in 2016 and 2017. During her career with the club, she received MVP honors in 2016 and captained the 2017 United 15s National Championship team. She also played for the Utah Lions Rugby Academy Ladies 7s in 2016, leading her team to a 1st place finish at the United World Games for Girls Rugby U18 Elite Division, where she was also one of the top scorers.

Tenney’s select side honors include attending the Girls High School All-American Camp in Casa Grande, Arizona in 2016 and 2017; being selected for the CAN-AM 2017 Tournament in Ottawa, Canada; playing in the 2017 Europe U18 7s Championships in France; and picked for the U.S.A. Rugby Girls High School All-American European 7s Tour 2016.

Tenney graduated from Orem High School in May 2017 with a 3.96 GPA. As a tri-sport athlete, she was a member of the Orem High School Women’s Basketball and Volleyball teams and played rugby for various clubs including United Rugby Girls Club 15s, Utah Cannibals Girls 7s, Utah Lions Rugby Academy Ladies 7s, and Orem Lady Stallions 15s and 7s. Off the rugby pitch, she let her impact be known by serving as the president of the Young Women’s Club and frequently volunteered her time to local organizations. She was also an active member of Aloha Dance School, performing at various festivals and events in the community. Her commitment to extra-curricular activities set her apart from her peers.

“Although she is very skilled and talented, her greatest asset may be her unmatched work ethic,” said Matthew Kanenwisher, United Rugby Head Coach. “This is evidenced by the love and respect her teammates have for her. Always leading by example, with quiet intensity, she is as happy to be doing the dirty work as she is in scoring. She is fearless, selfless, and always willing.”

She will continue her academic and athletic career at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri and intends on studying exercise science. After enduring ACL and MCL tears, she became inspired to pursue a career in physical therapy and wants to make a positive influence in the lives of other athletes. Tenney is eager to tackle the challenge of college rugby with high hopes of one day earning the honor to play for the U.S.A. Women’s Rugby Team.

“Not only do I want to be well-known on the field, but also off the field by inspiring female rugby players in the U.S. and working towards growing the sport,” said Tenney.

“Charity has been a consistent top side player for us since coming to our program,” said Billy Nicholas, her coach at Lindenwood. “She is a team player and always gives her best effort at each training session. She is excelling in her school work and embodies a student-athlete. Charity is an outstanding candidate for the Kevin Higgins Scholarship.”
