Nick Snyder -
2017 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient
San Diego, CA (December 31, 2017) - To Nick Snyder, rugby
is a family affair. Not only was the game passed down to him from his father,
but he values the relationships that he has developed with other ruggers around
the world. Rugby has influenced the 2017 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship
recipient to own his leadership skills and confidence. “Playing on travel teams
has helped me socialize with different people and play with players who have
their own unique styles to the game. Rugby has connected me to so many friends
that are enjoyable and I want to continue to be involved as long as I can,”
said Snyder.
Snyder played for the Sacramento Eagles for
four years earning captain and most valuable player honors. He was selected as
a member of the Sacramento Valley All-Star team for three consecutive seasons.
“Over the course of the last four years, I have
watched Nick develop into a mature young man. He exudes a level of confidence,
determination, toughness, and intelligence not often seen of young men in high
school, all the while consistently demonstrating a humble, gregarious, and positive
disposition that deserves and receives respect from his teammates and opponents
alike,” said Mark Fuller, Sacrament Eagles Rugby Club Head Coach.
Nick graduated from Rio Americano High School
in Sacramento, California with a 3.5 grade point average. He was recognized as
a National Merit Scholar in 2016 and was a four-year recipient of the Booster
Scholar Athlete Award at his high school. In addition to rugby, he was a
four-year member of the Rio Americano Raiders football team. He received honors
for his play, including a two-time Defensive Player of the Year title and four-year
captain. For four consecutive summers, Nick participated in a local
volunteering project to assist homeless teenagers in the Sacramento area. He
helped host a variety of garage sales and raised over $15,000 for the
organization, Wind Youth Services.
He is attending Gonzaga University and continues
his academic and athletic career with the Bulldogs. Nick will study business
with dreams of one day becoming the manager of a professional basketball team. He
has many team oriented goals like winning a championship with the Gonzaga Men’s
Rugby Club and making lifelong friendships with his teammates. He hopes to
improve on all sides of the ball during his collegiate career.
“Nick
is an excellent rugby player, teammate, and community member,” said Gonzaga
Men’s Rugby team captain, Thomas Owen. “On the field Nick is an experienced
player who has helped make a direct impact on the club. At a smaller university
like Gonzaga, the experienced players are asked to step up and assist in practice
and leadership. Nick has done these things and will be a major part of the
program in the future. He is extremely friendly and always is helping with
practice clean-up. Nick has made many friends on the team and lends to the overall
camaraderie of the program.”
Congratulations Nick, on being selected as a
