Loren Lewis -
 2017 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (December 31, 2017) - Loren Lewis can be described as soft spoken and shy, but on the rugby pitch her play is very loud. The 2017 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient uses rugby as an outlet of expression and a way to hone personal growth. Loren became a captain, a leader, a strong individual, and a curious mind. Her experiences with rugby have opened her eyes to new and different cultures and inspired her to explore the world.

Lewis has played rugby with ICEF Rugby for five consecutive years. During her tenure with ICEF, she has traveled to Hawaii, Las Vegas, Japan, and Brazil, competing against the best girl’s rugby teams around the world. In July of 2016, she was chosen to play with the Atlantis 7s select side in Salt Lake City, Utah at the North American Invitational 7s tournament. Loren will continue her rugby career with the University of California, Berkeley, Women’s Rugby team, saying “I want to leave a mark on Cal Women’s Rugby and be one of their best players.”

She graduated from View Park Preparatory Accelerated Charter High School in Los Angeles, California with a 3.9 grade point average. Her academic achievements led her to become a member of the National Honor Society. Not only was she dedicated to rugby, but also played four seasons of varsity volleyball and ran track for her high school. Loren was a member of View Park Prep’s student government and acted as both Junior Vice President and Senior President. She was an active volunteer for Queens We Are, a program at her school where she mentored girls who struggle academically and or behaviorally in their freshman year of high school.

Loren’s passion for helping others is natural, as she aspires to start her own non-profit organization called Humble, Wealthy, Living (H.W.L.) a program that would benefit inner city youth focus on academics, athletics, and travel opportunities. She hopes to counsel and mentor kids into achieving their hopes and dreams.

“She will be a stand out for Cal Women’s Rugby, she will be a standout in the classroom, and she will be an active leader in the community,” said Stuart Krohn, ICEF Public Schools, Director of Rugby.

“Not only has Loren shown the fortitude to come back from an intimidating injury, she has immediately become an integrated part of the team/family,” said Ashley Azadeh, Cal Women’s Rugby Forward's Captain. “Loren has never complained about conditioning, or really anything for that matter. Also, I know Loren works tirelessly at one of the dining halls on campus which is impressive in and of itself. Loren has a growth mindset and is incredibly kind to everybody."

Congratulations Loren, on being selected as a 2017 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.
