Labi Koi-Larbi -
 2017 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (December 31, 2017) - “Rugby was something I never expected to partake in before Gonzaga, but I am ecstatic I did,” said 2017 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship Recipient, Labi Koi-Larbi. “The life lessons which rugby has provided me coincides with my motto of being a man for others, which I live by on and off the rugby field.”

Labi was a four-year member of the Gonzaga College High School varsity rugby team and won back to back High School National Championship titles in 2015 and 2016. He led his team as captain in his senior season.

Labi graduated from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C. in June with a 3.2 grade point average. Outside of the pitch, he was highly involved with Asbury Church; volunteering with the food pantry and Sunday school; serving as an acolyte; and participating in the step team. He also volunteered with Campus Kitchen preparing and delivering food to low income families in the local area. Labi was an active member of Gonzaga’s black student union, the Onyx Club. Along with rugby, he was a member of the Gonzaga College High School football, hockey and wrestling programs.

“LJ is the very definition of an upstanding citizen. He demonstrated love for the many communities of which he is a part- church, school, his various sports teams, and Capital Partners for Education- and acts on those emotions to import the world around him. In my work with him, I have always known him to be charming, thoughtful, and kind; encouraging of others; persistent and driven. He very intentionally serves his communities while maintaining focus on his personal goals, which are many and far reaching,” said Demetrius R. Daniel, Capital Partners for Education, Program Manager.

Labi is attending Penn State University and is majoring in marketing. He is eager to develop his skills at the collegiate level and one day, hopes to wear the red, white, and blue as a U.S. Eagle. He is looking forward to creating life-long bonds with his teammates at Penn State with championship goals in mind.

His coach at Penn State University, Justin Hundley, has also found Labi to be a joy to work with.

“Labi has assimilated well into the speed and physicality of college rugby. You can tell he comes from a great background. He’s honest, hard-working and very coachable. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with him this year and look forward to seeing him grow as he has tremendous potential.”

Upon graduation, Labi intends on attending law school. He envisions a career of helping others as a lawyer.

Congratulations Labi, on being selected as a 2017 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.
