Megan Rose -
 2016 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (December 26, 2016) - To many, the sport of rugby is rough and rowdy, but to 2016 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient Megan Rose, the pitch is her safe haven and place of peace. Rugby is a factor that will forever be included in her past, present, and future goals. “Rugby is not all about winning or losing, but learning every day,” said Rose, when talking about suffering a devastating knee injury in her sophomore season. Through her everyday journey with rugby, she has learned that confidence, commitment, cooperation, respect, and appreciation can lead to overcoming any obstacle.

Megan was a standout member for Summit High School in Frisco, Colorado, receiving a team captain nod, team MVP honors, a two-time All-State First Team and Academic All-State First Teams selections, a Tiger Award, and Coach’s Award. In 2015, she was the student athlete scholarship winner for the Rugby Colorado Award. She has participated in various National High School 15’s and 7’s tournaments, rugby training camps, and appeared in games for Atlantis Elite Rugby.

She intends to play the game for as long as possible, enjoying all the game has to offer, and paying it forward on the sidelines one day as a coach or medical staffer.

“When she is not mastering academics, Megan has one of the most impressive resumes of participation, athletics, and volunteer service amongst her classmates. With Megan’s addition to our rugby team we have continued the excellence by capturing four consecutive state titles during her time on the team. Megan has served as a leader on the squad and had led her teammates to the highest levels of success available,” said Fred Koetteritz, Summit High School assistant track coach.

She is just as dedicated to her academics as she is to rugby. Megan excelled in the classroom, graduating from Summit High School with a 4.1 GPA. She took four AP/DP classes and made the gold honor roll each and every semester of high school. Megan was a member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and the Summa Cum Laude Honors. She also played ice hockey, soccer, and track and field for Summit High School, receiving team captain and Academic All-State first team honors.

Megan will attend Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut and will follow her passion for the health field by studying nursing. In her senior year of high school, she was jumpstarted into her career path and passed the Colorado State Certified Nursing Assistant Exam. As if that isn’t a large accomplishment in itself, she has also already been accepted into the nursing program at Quinnipiac. After graduation, she wishes to join the Nurses Without Borders program and travel around the world to different clinics to help those in need. Someday she hopes to be employed at a hospital helping people, while still finding the passion she has today for rugby and nursing.

Megan has worked endlessly to make her mark on Quinnipiac University Women’s Rugby in her first few months with the program. “Meg is a quality all around athlete that has much growing to do in her game but has the enthusiasm to match her potential," said Quinnipiac University Women’s Rugby Head Coach, Rebecca Carlson. "She has been placed in a variety of positions in her freshman year and has not thought twice about taking on the responsibility regardless of her comfort level or unfamiliarity with something new. Megan has thrived as a student athlete and is just as diligent in the classroom as on the pitch. Her coaches and teammates thoroughly enjoy Megan’s impact on the team."
