Dante Lopresti -
2016 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient
San Diego, CA (December 26, 2016) - Dante Lopresti originally
set his sights on playing baseball during his freshman year of high school.
However, the 2016 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient was asked by his
high school team’s rugby coaches to give the game a try. From the first day he
stepped on the pitch, he fell in love with the sport and never looked back! He
strives to incorporate rugby values in his everyday life, being a “man for
others” and serving in his community. “Rugby taught me how to be a better man
on and off the field,” said Lopresti.
He began playing rugby
on the freshman team at Gonzaga College High School in Washington, DC. Following
his first season, he played on the varsity team through his senior year. He
earned All-Met honors two years in a row and was selected for the Stars and Stripes
game in Greeley, Colorado as a junior. In his senior year, he led the team as
captain and Gonzaga to a third consecutive national championship.
of when to guide, when to support and when to challenge his teammates was the
single most important factor in such a young team winning a national
championship. Dante constantly led the team from the front on and off the field
with his inspirational “follow-me” leadership style and his daily living of the
school value of being a ‘man for others’,” said Peter Baggetta, Head Coach of
Gonzaga Varsity Rugby.
played for Team Maryland for three years and was named captain and team MVP in
his third season. He won numerous 7’s championship titles with the Maryland
Exiles for four seasons. Dante will continue to play rugby at the collegiate
level for Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio. Like many, his rugby dreams
include putting on the red, white, and blue to represent the United States and
competing against teams like world number one ranked New Zealand All Blacks. His
biggest goal is to evolve into the best player that he can be on and off the
field through continually practicing leadership, willingness to learn, and a
strong work ethic.
His career goals
include continuing his father’s plumbing business that has been passed down
from his grandpa. Dante also aspires to become a great father one day. He says
he wants to teach his children valuable lessons that he has learned from the
game, like the importance of working hard for everything you want or have and
being a role model.
In the early months of
his freshman season at Notre Dame College, Dante’s leadership skills have already
wowed his coaches and teammates. “Dante has been a positive influence for our team both
on and off the field. We brought in 23 new players from all over the world with
different backgrounds socially, culturally, and rugby knowledge wise, and Dante
has emerged as a leader and a catalyst for a very tight knit group of young
players,” said Notre Dame College Men’s Rugby Head Coach, Jason Fox. Dante is
one of just three freshmen to start during Notre Dame College Men’s Rugby’s
undefeated fall season. Fox said that Dante’s impact on the field helped lead
the team towards another shot at a D1AA National Championship appearance.Congratulations Dante, on being named a 2016
