Andrew Baldado -
 2016 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (December 26, 2016) - 2016 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient Andrew Baldado says that rugby has taught him a lot about character values that lead to success. His rugby resume is just one example of how he has taken these keys to heart. Andrew says that rugby has taught him the importance of being a proactive player and person. “A person who is proactive does not wait for things to come to him; rather, he makes thing happen for himself and seeks opportunities to improve.”

As a result of this mentality that Andrew upholds, he will have the opportunity to continue to thrive on the pitch at the collegiate level for The Ohio State University Buckeyes. He aims to fulfill his maximum playing potential and play at the highest level possible; specifically, he dreams of playing for the United States Men’s side in international competition.

He was a three-year varsity starter, two-time 15’s state champion, and three-time 7’s state champion at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio. In his senior season he was awarded the team captaincy and was a High School All American, participating in the U.S. campaign versus Ontario. In addition, he has received St. Ignatius varsity “Back of the Year” and varsity MVP honors in 2015 and 2016. He has appeared on Ohio high school all-star teams, Ohio Elite and Celtic Rugby, on three occasions. In 2015, Andrew was a Rugby Ohio “Mr. Rugby” finalist and All-Ohio Division I first team selection. He has also played for the Glendale Raptors U18 and U20 7’s teams and most recently with the Philippines Jr. National U19/U20 team.

“What really impresses me about Andrew is that he is much more than a very good rugby player. He is a National Merit Semi Finalist. He is a good teammate. He takes times at practice to help younger players with their passing and kicking. He is by nature a quiet kid. However, I noticed on our recent Texas Tour that he took the time to chat with opposing players after each of our matches. This is what rugby is all about. Andrew is a rugby man through and through,” said Tony Vegh, St. Ignatius freshman rugby coach.

He graduated from Saint Ignatius High School with a 3.95 GPA and received academic first honors four consecutive years. Andrew was also a 2016 National Merit finalist. He participated in basketball, football, and student senate at St. Ignatius. He held leadership roles in student senate, serving as junior class officer from 2014-2015 and senior class officer and co-head of spirit committee from 2015-2016. Andrew’s other accomplishments include serving as a peer math tutor, volunteering as a pallbearer for St. Joseph of Arimathea Pallbearer Ministry, acting as a summer camp counselor for Camp Can Do for special needs youth, and participating in the St. Ignatius High School Summer Enrichment program.

Andrew is enrolled in the Honors College at The Ohio State University where he will pursue a degree in pre-law, economics, or engineering. He plans on continuing to work hard in the classroom throughout college in order to set himself up to earn acceptance into a good law school if he chooses the pre-law path. Regardless, it is no question that Andrew will succeed in anything he sets his sight on.

Andrew made the decision to arrive to The Ohio State campus three weeks early for fall camp, commanding the attention of his coaches and peers. His hard work and dedication to the sport speak volumes of his capabilities as a young rugger and what he adds to the Ohio State Rugby team. Ohio State Rugby Head Coach, Ron Bowers, said that Andrew worked endlessly to improve throughout the fall season and was a big factor in leading the team to the BIG10 championship game. “Andrew is a great kid I really enjoyed having be a part of our rugby family. He fits right in and has his sights set high for how high he can go. I couldn't think of a better kid for your scholarship,” said Bowers.
