Taylor Honnette -
 2012 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (December 5, 2012) - On every rugby team that 2012 Kevin Higgins Scholarship recipient Taylor Honnette played on he was a leader. He captained his Granite Bay (CA) JV Rugby teams as both a freshman and a sophomore and the Varsity teams in his junior and senior years. According to his Granite Bay coach, John Kimble, the talented flyhalf is the complete player. “Taylor is a tremendous rugby player. He is a great leader and a passionate player. He has amazing talents as an athlete but his ability to read the game and see the field is one of his best attributes. I see potential for him to play as an Eagle some day!”

Taylor used those talents to earn the Granite Bay’s Coach’s Award in his freshman, sophomore and senior years. He also won the team’s Most Valuable Back award when he was in 10thgrade. In his senior season he was selected as a Sacramento Valley All-Star and was also invited on the Northern California All-Star Team's Canada Tour.

The only reason he got shut out from receiving any honors in his junior year was that a knee injury prevented him from playing at all that year. Despite the setback, Taylor says now that he’s thankful that it happened. “At first I was devastated but looking back on the situation, I’m actually grateful for what happened because of how I grew from the experience. Before the injury, I had a “lead by example” mindset, so the injury forced me to learn how to captain my team from the sidelines and develop a new vocal leadership that I had lacked previously.

“The injury was a good lesson in commitment: I had to not give up on my team or the season just because I was not able to play. Rather, I needed to embrace my new role as a coach for the team rather than as a player. It also taught me about determination: I needed to train hard in order to come back as a stronger player and lead my team for a successful senior season.”

Taylor is a freshman at Cal Poly, Kevin Higgins old stomping grounds, and head coach Dave Burnett likes what he sees in his new flyhalf. “Taylor is a very skillful player. He has stepped straight into the big shoes of flyhalf for our first XV and 7s sides. On the field Taylor shows great composure in big matches against sides like Cal, St. Mary’s and San Diego State, who would be in the top 10 7s sides in the country. He gets on well with his teammates and has the respect of the senior players in the club. He has a great training ethic and is always willing to help out. I’m very excited to see Taylor grow in the coming years. I expect there to be representative honors in his future.”

Besides playing rugby, Taylor was also involved with the Campus Life programs while at Granite Bay High School. He also served a summer internship with the Bayside Church and was a Student Church Leader all four years during high school. In addition to being captain of the rugby team his junior and senior years, he was also the club’s president. He helped coach junior high and U12 players and was an assistant coach for his school’s 7s team.

Taylor graduated from Granite Bay with a 4.1 GPA and was a member of the California Scholarship Federation his sophomore, junior and senior years.

Taylor put in a great deal of time helping those less fortunate. Every year during high school he spent his spring breaks in Mexico building homes for the homeless. In 2011 he volunteered time at the San Francisco Rescue Mission and organized children’s day camps at the Acres of Hope women’s shelter. In both 2011 and 2012 Taylor was a Bayside Church Kid’s Summer Camp leader and helped construct a new church facade for the Breakaway Kid’s Camp.

Taylor is studying engineering at Cal Poly and wants to be a Civil Engineer. In addition, he also hopes to use his life experiences to help others by being a high school small group leader.
