Michael Sullivan -
2012 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient
San Diego, CA (December 5, 2012) - Playing sports as a youth was Michael Sullivan’s way out of growing up in Public Housing. And Mike kept himself busy as a youngster with soccer, baseball, hockey, lacrosse, wrestling and weightlifting. It wasn’t until high school that he was introduced to rugby but once he did find the sport, it became his passion. Judah Boulet, Mike’s rugby coach and one of his teachers at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood, MA, takes us through Mike’s four years of rugby at Xaverian.
“As a freshman, Mike was an impact player for our developmental team. As a sophomore, Mike’s leadership abilities and talent on the field started to show themselves, and as a result, he earned a Coach’s Award at season’s end. His transformation as a player continued to develop and his passion for the sport and his ability to lead by example on the field as a junior, earned him Varsity Most Valuable Player honors. It was an easy choice to name him this year’s Varsity captain as he is respected by the entire coaching staff and team.
“Besides being a gifted athlete Mike is extremely coachable, listens intently at practice and strives to learn and improve. The same characteristics he showed in the classroom, he has showed on both the game field, and more importantly, the practice field. He has a confidence about him and has innate leadership qualities where he is able to pick up those around him, which leads to team success. He is one of those rare students that come along where I am truly excited about his future, but realize the void that will need to be filled when he is gone.”
In addition to individual honors at his school, Mike was also selected for the Massachusetts All-State team and Massachusetts U19s. He was also a part of the Mystic River Rugby Club team that toured Ireland this past February. Mike’s dream is to play on the international stage representing the U.S. and always wants “to be involved in some way with rugby be it playing, coaching, officiating or organizing.”
Besides rugby, Mike played four years of football at Xaverian. He was also a member of the school’s wrestling and power lifting teams. Mike never missed a day of class and he made the honor roll every term he was enrolled at Xaverian while compiling a 3.7 GPA. Mike was Vice President of Xaverian’s Student Council, participated in the school’s Senior Service program and voluntarily attended Xaverian Leadership Institute. He was also a Peer Mediator to underclassmen, a position which required Mike to act as a mentor to underclassmen.
When he was 14, Mike volunteered as a counselor-in-training at summer camp. He also volunteered 225 hours at his former elementary school working frequently with special needs students.
Mike is attending one of the top collegiate rugby programs in the country, Kutztown University, and he continues to display his commitment and passion for the game. “Mike is very punctual and has attended every team meeting and team practice session,” said his new coach, Dr. Gregg Jones.“Mike is an individual who listens and follows instructions. He is a complete team player and willingly played more than one position when needed. He plays the game with passion and absolutely loves the sport. Mike is well-liked by his teammates and often assumes a leadership role during practice and matches. He is a conscientious student and a welcome addition to our rugby program at Kutztown University.”
Mike is “interested in becoming a physical therapist or possibly doing something with human kinetics. I am fascinated with science and the way the human body works.”
