Jake Hoffman -
2012 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient
San Diego, CA (December 5, 2012) - Jacob Hoffman began his rugby career in February on 2009 and almost immediately, his impact was felt. He became the starting hooker for the Plano Rugby Club in Plano, TX his sophomore season and started every match in the number two jersey until he graduated this past June. “As a high school head coach for the last 13 years, the hardest spot to fill on the team, in my estimation, is hooker. So much can go wrong with dire results. The last three years have been a blessing having to fill in the card on Saturdays at #2, Jake Hoffman,” said Plano head coach Frank Waller.
Not only was Jake dependable, he was also talented. Said his head coach, “Jake dominated this year. His lineout throws were dead on, hooking outstanding and his leadership on the field tremendous as he helped our new front rows grow. Jake is a quiet leader who leads from the front.”
While he may have led with quiet fortitude, Jake made lots of noise with ball in hand. On a team that scored over 35 points in every game but one in a 16 game schedule and whose only loss was in the Texas state finals, Jake was Plano’s leading try scorer. Not many hookers can list that on their rugby resume.
Of course Jake’s own coach is going to build up his star player. But coaches around the state of Texas also took notice of Jake’s play in his senior season and voted Jake the state of Texas’ Most Valuable Forward. Jake plays the game the way it should be played. As one coach said to Coach Waller, “I saw Jake take the ball and head up field straight at one of my guys and completely obliterate him, offload the ball, then help my kid get back to his feet, patted him on the butt, then went straight into the next ruck.”
Jake has enjoyed individual and team success since he first put on a pair of boots. In 2010 he played on both Plano’s U17 and U19 teams. His U19 team finished third in state while Jake was named the team’s Forward of the Year for the U17s and was selected for the North Texas and Texas U17 All-Star teams. Plano finished 4thin the state his junior year while he was named to the North Texas and Texas U19 teams.
This past season, Plano won the Stephen F. Austin and A&M Rugby Tournaments before losing their only match of the year in the state championship game. He was named the team’s Most Valuable Forward and again was selected to the North Texas and Texas state All-Star teams.
In addition to playing rugby Jake also helped coach and mentor younger players at practice and at junior clinics. He played four years of football at Wakeland High School. He played three years of soccer and three years of basketball. Jake’s overall GPA at Wakeland High School was 3.65 and he was a member of the National Technical Honor Society from 2009-2012 and the Spanish Honor Society from 2009-2011.
Jake has also given back to his community. He’s been a hospital volunteer assisting in the physical therapy department at the Centennial Medical Center as well as a Certified Nurse’s Aide. He volunteered at the City of Frisco’s Barktoberfest, benefitting Frisco’s SPCA. He’s volunteered at the Frisco Family Services 2011 Gala and Back to School Back Pack Program.
He’s also assisted the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas, the Wakeland Chapter Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and on several occasions, the Wakeland Athletic Booster Club. Last year he was also a part of the Wakeland Football Team’s Welcome Home a Hero event as they welcomed home troops from overseas duty.
Jake is currently playing rugby and attending classes at Texas Tech University. He has impressed his coaches and teammates with his skill, size and pace. He plans on getting an undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences and would then get his Doctorate in Physical Therapy School, also at Texas Tech. He would eventually like to work as a physical therapist, specializing in sports therapy or elderly therapy.
Congratulations Jake on being named a 2012 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.
