Bradley Roberts -
2012 Kevin Higgins College
Scholarship Grant Recipient
San Diego, CA (December 5, 2012) - Having spent his early years growing up in England, 2012 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient Bradley Roberts was exposed to rugby early in life. He was able to see many of the top English players on a weekly basis and rugby teams were everywhere. When Bradley’s family moved to the San Diego area in 2005 it was a challenge for him to find a team. Fortunately, a new team called the San Diego Mustangs had recently formed and Bradley was “able to carry on my passion for the game.”
Bradley first played for the Mustangs U12s then climbed up through the ranks of the Mustangs culminating with playing for their U19s the past two years. But there were many highlights in between. Bradley’s U16 Mustangs team was the 2010 U16 Southern California champions as they finished with a 35-0 record. Bradley was the team’s MVP and he was also selected as the starting scrumhalf for the Southern California U17 Griffins. That same year Bradley was part of the first ever Torrey Pines High School rugby team. Torrey Pines also went through the season undefeated and was crowned Southern California High School Champions.
He co-captained the Mustangs U19 team in 2011 to the Southern Cal quarterfinals. He was selected as captain and starting scrumhalf for the Griffins U17s, helping his team to a third place finish in the Rocky Mountain Challenge. As a co-captain again in 2012 he led the Mustangs to another undefeated season and the Southern California U19 title. Bradley received the team’s Captain’s Award, given to the player who has a love for the game, who plays with honor and respect, and who is a true ambassador of himself, the club and the sport of rugby.
When not racing around the rugby pitch, Bradley enjoys doing community service in the San Diego area. For four years he was a member of the Canyon Crest Academy’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes, working at numerous fundraising events which assisted the homeless. He was also a four-year member of the school’s Key Club, a club run by students to serve the community while also teaching the students valuable leadership and teamwork skills. Bradley volunteered to work on the USS Midway, working alongside many veterans helping to maintain the aircraft carrier museum. He also volunteered at St. Therese Catholic Church, and Study Buddies, working one on one with students to help them be more successful not only academically but socially. Bradley graduated with a 3.6 GPA.
Being a Collegiate All-American, playing for the United States in the 2016 Olympic Games and playing professional rugby are Bradley’s goals for his rugby future. He’s picked one of the top college rugby programs in the country to further his rugby development as he is a freshman at St. Mary’s College. His coach, Tim O’Brien, likes how his young scrumhalf is fitting in at St. Mary’s.
“Bradley is an engaging, articulate lad who seems ‘born to be a Gael’. He embodies the Lasallian spirit, inspiring those around him in the classroom and on the playing fields. I sense he has a special compassion for the weak and frail. In conversations with Bradley, I believe the Lasallian approach to teaching and learning based on the idea that education is how we give back to others — that we can only truly understand ourselves in relation to the world and the people that surround us ‘is what he’s all about’. He deeply believes at Saint Mary’s; we "Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve”….. We are quite pleased to have this caliber of a person participating in the club rugby program on campus.”
Congratulations Bradley on being named a 2012 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.
