 Ben Roach -
2010 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (November 1, 2010) - Ben Roach was an instrumental player for the Bellarmine College Preparatory rugby team in San Jose, CA for the three years he played there. Not only was he a talented player and leader on the field, but Ben’s enthusiasm and promotion of the rugby team played a vital role in getting the program recognized on campus. Ben was also skilled at bringing in new players as he helped raise team numbers from 18 in 2007 to 60 in 2010.

Ben may have been the first underclassman to be named captain of the Bellarmine team since its inception in 1980 when he was given that honor in his junior year. During his senior year the flyhalf/inside center led the team to their first-ever trips to the State Playoffs and Nationals. Considering the team had been winless during Ben’s sophomore year, the team had made enormous strides.

Ben is one of those players that are hard to be replaced once they have graduated as one of his Bellarmine coaches, Terry Ryan, described Ben. “Ben is a hard worker and an enthusiastic leader. He dedicated many hours to the club this past year be it organizing the lunchtime meetings, practices or game day activities. I was able to depend on him without reservation knowing that his follow-through was consistent. Ben is thoughtful, conscientious and willing to do the extra work up front to ensure that the end result is positive. He treated the underclassmen with respect and patience, regardless of their year, athletic ability or quickness in picking up the game.”

Ben’s leadership ability wasn’t restricted to the playing field. While maintaining a 3.4 GPA, he served as a leader (“Big Brother”) during orientation for the freshmen class for two years; was a Freshman Orientation Leader for one year; and was a Kairos Leader twice during his senior year. Ben was a member of Bellarmine’s Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) for four years, serving as president one year and vice-president another. He was a member of the Social Justice Organization for four years as well as a member of HUGS, a group made up of students who made and delivered lunches to the homeless.

During the course of his four years in high school, Ben amassed a total of 213 hours of community service, including, working with elementary and Special Education children; participating in immersion trips to El Salvador, Fort Benning, GA and Tijuana, Mexico; assisting the homeless as a volunteer at Sacred Heart Community Center; and serving at the Sacred Heart Food Bank.

The leadership skills Ben learned captaining his rugby team has carried over into his work. He was awarded “Partner of the Month” for his teamwork and leadership skills at his job at Starbucks Coffee Company. His boss, Francia Luna, said, “Ben is extremely hard working, very dedicated and definitely a team player. He is always willing to go the extra mile.”

That is likely why, as a freshman, Ben has started in four of the first five games for his team at Providence College. “Ben has been a great addition to Providence College,” said Providence coach Mike Cox. “He is the first at practice and the last to leave, always making sure he says thank you before he departs. He works as hard off the field as he does on. He also helps out with any new rugby players, teaching them the game of rugby. I am happy to have Ben here. I feel strongly that he will do great things in his life.”

At Providence, Ben plans on earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Management and Public Policy with a minor in Marketing or Health Law as he wants to provide health care for people in third world countries. “The small things we all take for granted, including a trip to the doctor are only dreams for these families and their kids. I wish to make even these simple necessities and dreams a reality and use my gifts to help others succeed.”

Congratulations Ben on being named a 2010 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.
