 Frank Viancourt -
2010 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship Grant Recipient

San Diego, CA (November 1, 2010) - Like many graduating high school seniors, Frank Viancourt had difficult decisions to make. As an accomplished athlete in rugby, football and wrestling, Frank was approached by several universities offering scholarships based on his football and wrestling prowess. While the scholarships would have helped cut tuition costs, Frank’s heart and passion was in rugby and elected to bypass those offers to pursue his rugby career at Bowling Green State University.

Because of his exceptional talent on the field and mat, Frank was named the Athlete of the Year at Holy Name High School in Parma Heights, OH his senior year. Along with excelling in rugby, wrestling and football, Frank was also selected as captain for all three of his teams his senior year, demonstrating the leadership skills this young man possesses.

Though he is a rare athlete, the sport of rugby did not come naturally to Frank. According to Thomas Jones, his coach at Parma Blackheart Rugby Club, it was Frank’s dedication and tenacity that made him grow as a player to eventually captain the Blackhearts. He started out as an outside center his freshman year and as his skills and leadership started to shine he was moved to flanker and helped lead his team to the Ohio State Championships in 2008, 2009 and 2010 and was a two-time Ohio Select Side player.

His Ohio Select coach, Robert Ciresi, named Frank captain of the 2010 team and says it was an obvious decision. “Our team is comprised of young men from all regions, which is a very unique dichotomy. Our players represent different nationalities, races, religions and statuses. Within an hour after our first practice, Frank became a leader. He had gained the respect of all and all looked to him as their captain.”

Frank was a member of Holy Name’s Campus Ministry and helped set up the school’s athletic events. He also assisted in raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association; organized fundraising efforts that benefitted the homeless; provided yard work to the elderly; and taught gun and water safety to area children.

Frank is already starting to make an impact at his new surroundings at Bowling Green. “Frank has been a great addition to the team,” said head coach Tony Mazzarella. “He has made a commitment to training, learning our systems, and improving on the skills that will make him a standout player at this level. We are very excited to have Frank involved with our team for the next four years and are looking forward to seeing him reach his potential both in the classroom and on the field.

Academically, Frank’s one true passion is history and will be his course of study while at Bowling Green. “Learning about how and why things happened, reading about great men and women of the past and how they changed our world, hearing stories of acts of bravery and courage to overcome impossible odds are both insightful and inspiring to my life. Studying history has been just as much a passion of mine as playing rugby.”

Congratulations Frank on being named a 2010 Kevin Higgins College Scholarship recipient.
