International Director John Vincent Smith Announces Retirement
San Diego, CA (January 21, 2005) - After serving on the board of the United States Rugby Foundation for over 20 years as an International Director, John Vincent Smith has announced his retirement. Mr. Smith first started appearing at USRF Board Meetings in the 1980s, just before he became President of the Rugby Football Union.
"My connection with the USRF goes back to the England tour in 1982, immediately prior to my year as President of the RFU," said Mr. Smith. "I was invited to join the Foundation Board along with Bob Weighill, then RFU Secretary. Fritz Grunebaum was Chairman and then there was Joe Walsh with whom a long and happy friendship continues. There have been so many happy days. I like to think I was of some help in those early years."
Indeed he was as Mr. Smith brought with him loads of experience to the USRFF Board. He was also a frequent host to the many visits by USRF Trustees on their visits to England.
The Smith name remains an important part of the USRF Board of Trustees and Directors however as John Vincent's son, Peter Smith, continues in his role as USRFF International Director.
