John Jelaco - Director
John Jelaco started his involvement with rugby in 1974 with the Sacramento Capitols and then joined the B.A.T.S. (Bay Area Touring Side) club in 1976. While with the B.A.T.S., John was selected to the United States National Team, playing in international matches against Canada and England in 1982. He also played for the U.S. Cougars from 1980-85 and after the B.A.T.S., spent several years with the Los Angeles Rugby Club. John also played for the Pacific Coast Grizzles, Northern Cal Pelicans, Valley Oaks, California Poppies and the Southern Cal Griffins from 1975 to 1986.
John also made contributions to the sport off the field. He was the Manager of the USA 7s team from 1992-97. He was a Founding Member of Team America in 1987 and served as that organization’s president until 2007. He was awarded the USA President’s Award in 2002 and the Craig Sweeney Award in 2007.
John began his long career in the trucking industry in 1975 as a warehouse manager, learning the industry from the ground floor up. He started his first trucking company Batco in 1979 and started Golden Eagle Express in 1981, John has served as President and CEO of this company until it was purchased by Dependable Highway Express, Inc in 2007.
John is a member of several trucking organizations. He is also on the Board of Directors for the Gospel Relief Ministries, Board advisor for Liberty Mutual Insurance, Board member of the California Trucking Assoc as well as an advisor for the Miles Ahead Organization for Children.
